KUVO has a full-time staff of nine, a part-time staff of five, two independent contractors and one full-time volunteer - all of whom are experienced in broadcast media,  the performing arts, non-profit organizations, community service, marketing and community outreach.  We also have a small army of dedicated volunteers who make all the difference at jazz89!

Alfredo Cruz

CEO/President

Mr. Cruz joined the station April 1, from his most recent position as Assistant General Manager/Music Director at KRTU FM, San Antonio, where he also served as Station Manager.  His 27 years of public radio experience include on-air and production positions with two of the nation's most recognized public radio jazz formats, WBGO FM, Newark and KKJZ FM, Long Beach.  Cruz's first exposure to public radio jazz began at National Public Radio in Washington, D.C., where he was the production assistant and broadcast director for the Peabody-Award-winning program Jazz Alive!  Alfredo's passion for jazz and his experience with some of the nation's top public radio jazz stations made him the clear choice of both the selection committee and station statff.

Carlos Lando

COO/ Program Director / Host of "The Takeaway"

Carlos has over 30 years of experience in radio - his first night on the air was on the Armed Forces Caribbean Network in Puerto Rico, followed by a stint at WOUR-FM in New York.  He began a new show on WZAR called "Jazz - Where It's Been and Where It's At", where he interviewed greats like Count Basie, Dexter Gordon, Betty Carter and many others.  He then moved to Denver where he spent five years at KDKO and a year at KBCO before coming to KUVO.  In addition to being the COO and overseeing the daily operations at jazz89 KUVO, Carlos has been KUVO's Program Director for over 20 years - he's responsible for making sure that "it's all about the music" on jazz89.  Carlos can be reached at 303-480-9272  x25 or carlos@kuvo.org.

Tina Cartagena

Director of Development and Marketing

Tina has been a part of the KUVO family for 18 years!  During her tenure at KUVO, she has developed both the Membership and Underwriting Departments, coordinated all "Live at the Oasis" CD series, helped the station's annual budget reach $1,000,000, and developed the station's website (past and current).  In 2006, KUVO produced "Caliente: Latin Jazz with Eddie Palmieri"; Tina coordinated the national marketing efforts for this successful series.  Tina can be reached at 303-480-9272  x12 or tina@kuvo.org

Susan Gatschet Reese

Asst. Program Director / Host of "Jazz with Susan Gatschet Reese"

Susan Gatschet-Reese has been a staff member of KUVO for over 10 years. She is the Assistant Program Director and host of Midmorning Jazz from 9am till noon, Monday-Friday.  Susan schedules the High School & Collegiate Series, public service announcements, "Live at the Oasis" Professional Series and assists with the day-to-day programming department operations.  You can contact Susan at 303-480-9272 x26 or susan@kuvo.org

Victor Cooper

Production Manager / Host of "Drive Time Jazz"

Victor graduated from Denver's East High School and attended CU before serving in the Air Force.  He has a long history in broadcast journalism, including Channel 7 television and radio stations KOSI, KADX, KRKS and KHIH - to name a few. He started as a volunteer substitute on-air host and is now our  Production Manager.  Victor handles the "voice" of KUVO, creating the recorded spots, recording interviews and shows and a whole lot more!  Contact Victor at victor@kuvo.org or 303-480-9272 x28.

Tamara Banks

THE TAKEAWAY LOCAL HOST

Emmy Award winning Tamara Banks is a well known former anchor/reporter at KWGN-TV's WB2 News @ 9. Before coming to Denver she was an anchor/reporter at the ABC Affiliate at KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She's also worked in TV and radio news in a number of markets including Dallas, Texas and Alburquerque, New Mexico. The Colorado Broadcasters Association, Associated Press, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Colorado Association of Black Journalists, have all recognized Tamara for her journalism work. Tamara is also host of KBDI-TV's "Studio 12," a provocative one hour, live weekly talk show taking a closer look at relevant issues in Denver, the nation, and the world. You can contact Tamara at tamara@kuvo.org

Nathan Heffel

Broadcast Producer

Nathan has always been interested in radio, from competing in the 'radio broadcasting' catergory for his middle school forensics team, to DJ'ing a late night college radio show at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin where he earned his Political Science degree. Nathan has a certificate in Broadcast Arts from the Ohio Center for Broadcasting, Denver. Previously an Assistant Producer for the multi-award winning Kelly, Mudflap and JoJo Morning Show on KYGO FM in Denver, he has covered local events from the Windsor, CO tornado to the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Nathan has also been the Denver Correspondent for The Takeaway national show, which airs on over 75 stations around the country and on XM/Sirius satelite radio. Judi Williams

Membership Services

Judi Williams is a native Coloradoan, but spent most of her life in the greater St. Louis area.  A large part of her working life has been connected to education and medicine - and she worked a number of years in "every woman's dream job" doing association management in the shoe business.  So many shoes, but she could only wear one pair at a time!  She returned to Colorado in 1998 and while surfing for a good jazz station she found "Rockin'n' Rhythm with Mama Kat" on KUVO.  After volunteering for several years, Judi became a staff member in 2006; she processes membership donations and underwriting payments in addition to handling KUVO customer service.  Judi can be reached at 303-480-9272 x13 or judi@kuvo.org

Senior Underwriting Account Executive

Patrick currently handles national and major underwriting accounts for KUVO/KVJZ. His advertising career spans almost two decades and includes positions with ABC Television, Warner Brothers, PBS, United Paramount Network (UPN), The CW, radio, print and web media. Patrick has also worked with a variety of advertising agencies and has received awards for creative development from the Alaska Broadcasters Association. Patrick was raised in Denver and attended university at C.U.-Boulder.

ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Mike Pappas

Chief Engineer

Mike Pappas is the Chief Engineer at KUVO and he brings a wealth of knowledge in broadcast media to the table.  He serves as the Senior Applications Engineer for Sennheiser Electric Corporation and throughout his wide-ranging career Mike has been a prolific broadcast engineer with experience including more than 1,500 live sporting events, the 2000 Democratic convention and various Super Bowls. In addition, he's been nominated for multiple Emmys and has recorded international jazz artists. Mike schedules the ISDN telephone feeds, handles the CD recordings in the performance studio and coordinates the live broadcast remotes.  He has been at KUVO since 1994.
