The Board of Directors for Denver Educational Broadcasting / KUVO is responsible for setting the policy for the station and assists in fundraising for the station.  It established the By-laws and Mission Statement for the station, and empowers the staff to carry out the policy and direction of the station.  Membership on the BOD can be as high as 15 Directors, but must be a minimum of 51% Hispanic / Latino.  The BOD holds the hiring and evaluation authority over the General Manager / CEO of KUVO, and has the fiscal and fiduciary responsibility for the financial health of KUVO.

The Board of Directors for KUVO meets every other month, on the last Tuesday of the month at 6:00pm at the KUVO Studios.  The meetings are open to the public.  Time is set aside for public comment, however, time is limited and anyone wishing to  provide comment at a meeting must RSVP before the meeting date, to be put on the public comment list.

Community Developement

David is president of Zocalo Community Development, a vertically-integrated developer, contractor, architect, and marketer of LEED-certified, mixed-income, mixed-use projects.  David received his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1990. In addition to his service to the board of KUVO, he is a co-chair of the Downtown Denver Partnership’s Center City Housing Council.  He is co-chair of the University of Denver’s Affordable Housing Conference.  David received the Affordable Housing Leader of the Year Award for 2006 from the Denver chapter of the Enterprise Foundation.  “My passion for KUVO comes from my desire to support this station that feeds my thirst for jazz.  We are blessed to have a station, staff, volunteers and listeners that, for nearly 25 years, have consistently delivered jazz in all of its forms.  I know of no station in Denver that’s had this longevity.  I want to help it to achieve another 25 years.

CEO/President - Alfredo Cruz

Mr. Cruz joined the station April 1, 2010 from his most recent position as Assistant General Manager/Music Director at KRTU FM, San Antonio, where he also served as Station Manager.  His 27 years of public radio experience include on-air and production positions with two of the nation's most recognized public radio jazz formats, WBGO FM, Newark and KKJZ FM, Long Beach.  Cruz's first exposure to public radio jazz began at National Public Radio in Washington, D.C., where he was the production assistant and broadcast director for the Peabody-Award-winning program Jazz Alive!  Alfredo's passion for jazz and his experience with some of the nation's top public radio jazz stations made him the clear choice of both the selection committee and station statff.

Treasurer - William Struck

Bill Struck is a retired radio veteran who lives in Denver, Colorado.
Mr. Struck has over forty years of experience on air, in sales and, for the last twenty years, in upper management positions. He retired as Clear Channel’s Regional Vice President for West Texas; overseeing El Paso, Lubbock, Amarillo, and Abilene, Texas plus Guymon, Oklahoma. He previously managed stations in Colorado Springs and Denver, Colorado and two stations in Salt Lake City, Utah. He also was a founding partner and Vice President of Operations for the Park Lane Group, a San Francisco, California based company that acquired radio stations in small and medium markets in the Western United States.
Mr. Struck has been President of four local broadcaster associations in Colorado Springs, Denver, Salt Lake City and El Paso. He served on the board of directors of the Colorado Broadcasters Association and the Texas Association of Broadcasters. He has also been an active rotary member for various clubs in the cities in which he has lived. In 2004-2005 Mr. Struck was Chairman of the Better Business Bureau of El Paso. He also served on the boards of directors of the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, The Humane Society of El Paso, and the Advertising Federation of El Paso.
Mr. Struck now serves as President of the Broadcast Professionals of Colorado and is a director on the board of KBDI public television in Denver.
Bill is married to Lyndel and resides in the Denver suburb of Cherry Creek. They have four children and six grandchildren.

Director - Dr. Ramon Del Castillo

Metropolitan State College of Denver

Ramon Del Castillo is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Chicano and Chicana Studies Department at Metropolitan State College of Denver. As past Chair of the Masters Program of Nonprofit Management at Regis University for 5 years, Dr. Del Castillo managed and taught leadership, ethics and diversity classes in the program. He developed and implemented the “Making Connections in Mexico Program,” with ITESO University in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, designed to develop binational curricula in the area of the nonprofit and civil society sectors between Mexico and the United States.  

Educationally, Ramon Del Castillo possesses a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology and Mexican American Studies from the University of Northern Colorado. His Masters Degrees are in Social Science and Public Administration from the University of Colorado at Denver. Dr. Del Castillo completed his doctoral studies from the Graduate School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado at Denver. His doctoral dissertation, using the theory of innovation, examined Curanderismo, a traditional approach to holistic healing, and its institutionalization within a publicly funded mental health agency.

As a Chicano poet for the last 3 decades, Ramon’s work has appeared in a variety of magazines and books including but not limited to: Cantos Al Sexto Sol: An Anthology of Aztlanahuac Writing; Cool Salsa edited by Lori M. Carlson and Encyclopedia Chicana. His next book, entitled Quetzales are not Extinct should be published soon. He has 4 published books entitled, 1) Broken Concrete; 2) From the Corazon of a Bato Loco! 3) When the Owl Can’t Sleep at Night; and 4) Tales from a Michoacano. He was recently transformed into a conguero with a local group, Great Kiva, where he has developed the written work in a concept referred to as 'flor y canto', or 'poejazz'. 

As a past columnist for the Rocky Mountain News and a current columnist for El Semanario, Dr. Del Castillo is known for his thought-provoking and insightful essays regarding the plight of persons of color and public policy concerns and issues. He is an activist scholar and co-founder of the Cesar Chavez Peace and Justice Committee of Denver, that organizes a yearly march and celebration and participates in many struggles for the human and civil rights of all people. Ramon was awarded the Richard T. Castro Memorial Community Service Award for multi-cultural mental health program innovation. In 1998, he was awarded the prestigious Colorado State Division of Civil Right’s Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award. His awards also include the “Spirit of Tlatelolco Award,” (2005) and national recognition from the Latino and Latina Student Law Association for his contributions to humanitarianism.

I am involved in KUVO because it is the best jazz station in the country. I believe that public radio is one of the last bastions of free speech. ORALE!

COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD

The Community Advisory Board is the voice of the community at-large and provides a forum for the community to the station. The CAB is the liaison between the BOD and staff of KUVO and the public. The CAB performs community outreach to create awareness about KUVO and its programming, volunteers at special events and membership pledge drives, and conducts surveys to see what the community wants from its public radio station.
