Katie Thiroux, an award-winning bassist and vocalist hailing from Los Angeles, began playing acoustic bass at 8 years old and was landing principal roles in the LA Opera and Opera Pacifica by the age of 10.

“As soon as I held the [bass], I knew it was for me,” Katie said.

Captivated by an early recording of Lionel Hampton, Katie was driven to pursue her love for jazz at a young age.

“I just could tell that [the musicians] were having so much fun while they were playing,” said Katie. “I wanted to have fun like that too.”

A May 2015 featured “player” by Downbeat, Katie’s debut album, Introducing Katie Thiroux, was released in February and has received rave reviews.

Katie completed a bachelor’s at Berklee College of Music, taught at the Berklee International School in Ecuador, and earned a masters of jazz bass from California State University of Long Beach on a full scholarship.

“There’s endless possibilities with music,” Katie said. “As much as I push myself with music, it pushes me right back.”

To celebrate 30 years on the air and invest in the future of jazz, KUVO interviewed 30 local musicians under the age of 30 – and a special bonus feature of L.A. bassist and vocalist Katie Thiroux.
