Pianist, songwriter, and singer Nate Lawrence was introduced to jazz through a back door when his parents shared the music of Carlos Santana and the Allman Brothers with him.

“All that improvisation got me really interested in fusion, like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock,” Nate said.

Though he started playing piano at a young age, it wasn’t until he started delving into blues scales and improvisation that he started to enjoy it.

“When I started doing that, my classical teacher didn’t know what to do with me,” Nate said.

An avid songwriter, Nate prides himself on his clever lyrics.

“I like to think of my lyrics as riddles, you might not understand them the first time you hear them,” Nate said.

You can catch Nate playing around town with his trio as well as The Tickle Mafia, The Orchid Room, Vintage 3D, and Art Smart Anatomy.

To celebrate 30 years on the air and invest in the future of jazz, KUVO interviewed 30 local musicians under the age of 30. These features will be released on-air and online June 29-October 31.
