Raw, Bold & Unapologetic: Su Teatro’s “Real Women Have Curves” | March 12-April 4

RAW, BOLD and UNAPOLOGETIC sum up Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Art Center’s production of “Real Women Have Curves,” running until April 4.

Su Teatro’s Executive Artistic Director Anthony J Garcia said the theater strives to tell untold stories, and their latest production did just that.

Depicting the everyday challenges of five Latina sweatshop workers in the late ’80s, the play speaks to the issues women of every time and background face – body image, women’s rights and relationships of every kind.

Penned by award-winning playwright, Josefina Lopez, the play is based on Lopez’s own experience in her sister’s sewing factory in Los Angeles.

The play dives headfirst into taboo topics – including infertility, spousal abuse, menopause and immigration regulations – uncovering them in a very visceral way. In doing so, the actors boldly leave everything on stage.

“What I hope is that the play and the performance given…by these five amazing women will spur a conversation in the lobby, on the way home, tomorrow at work or at the dinner table with your family,” writes director Debra Gallegos in her Director’s Notes.

“Josefina Lopez…gave us a timeless story of women and the power they evoke ‘when working together,'” writes Gallegos.
