Goldstar

As we begin to move towards the Fall, the music keeps on coming. During this week, for example, you can catch David Amram, along with singers Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kendra Shank and Katie Thiroux (who is also a strong bassist). Amram not only keeps the beat going on multiple instruments, he is also a living symbol of the Beat Generation. And on Wednesday, he's at Dazzle, 1512 Curtis, in a concert sponsored by MAS Eclectic at 7:30 p.m. (303-839-5100).

Saxophonist Donny McCaslin began his recording career in the late 1990s after attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. He developed jazz saxophone credibility and then reached a somewhat different and interesting peak with his role on the David Bowie album Blackstar – Bowie’s last CD that was released just days before the singer’s death. That has opened McCaslin up to an even broader range of musical expression captured on his disc Blow that is coming out in early October.

In 2011, saxophonist Dave Liebman, who is in town as a featured guest with saxophonist Keith Oxman’s group at Dazzle on Friday, joined the ranks of the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Masters. Born in Brooklyn, Liebman founded a co-operative of young players that became part of the New York loft scene. And before long the saxophonist found himself part of drummer Elvin Jones’ Jazz Machine.

There are a lot of opportunities to appreciate jazz during the current week of Jazz Appreciation Month. Here are the highlights. First up is guitarist Earl Klugh’s Weekend of Jazz at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. This is the 15th year of the weekend of crossover jazz organized by the acoustic guitarist and company that usually sells out the 1,100 seats at the famed hotel/resort’s International Center.
