Commercial radio is for-profit, income-generated programming. Commercial radio stations often must stick to corporate-driven playlists and depend on the sale of airtime for commercials for their income. Commercials can be pre-recorded, and often are call-to-action-based (i.e, “buy now”, “for a limited time”, “mention this ad”).
Public radio is non-profit, member-driven and community-based. Public radio stations cannot broadcast commercials or use call-to-action-based announcements. That means public radio is “commercial-free”! Instead of commercials, an on-air host will read the information (usually 30 words or less) and give the phone number and address of the supporting business or event.
KUVO JAZZ is a public radio station, and commercial-free. We rely on our members and sponsoring businesses for income. That means more music for you, the listener!
HD Radio is a brand name of a method of digital transmission of both AM and FM stations. The HD Radio system is unique in that it allows stations to broadcast high-quality audio (no hiss) and offer a variety of text-based services (what song is playing, who played it) much like satellite radio. HD also offers the option of broadcasting additional channels without changing to a different frequency. In the near future, KUVO JAZZ will be able to offer 2 channels of programming at 89.3.
HD stands for “Hybrid Digital” and not “High Definition” as is commonly thought. HD Radio is a trademarked brand name. The FCC decided that HD would be the standard, giving AM channels more clarity and FM channels the opportunity to multicast. As of July 23, 2007, more than 1360 radio stations across the country are broadcasting with HD radio technology and more than 600 of those stations are offering multicast channels. Like traditional AM and FM stations, HD radio programming is free, but a new radio system is required. Right now, HD is readily available for car stereos and a limited number of desktop/home HD radio brands are available.
KUVO JAZZ was the first Colorado radio station to begin broadcasting in HD!
If you are looking for a particular song and you know what time or which show it was played on, it is easy to find the song.
Or if you just liked the set a specific on-air host did, you can find out what was played during the entire show.
As with all nonprofits in Colorado, Rocky Mountain Public Media must send donation acknowledgment letters by January 31 each year to comply with IRS guidelines. The letters include donor names, contribution dates/details, and information regarding goods or services and related good faith estimates/fair market value(s).
Please note for one-time donations, the thank you letter you received after your donation was made does act as your tax acknowledgement letter for that donation. Monthly or sustaining donations are added up at the end of the calendar year and are sent by January 31, per IRS guidelines.
While inquiring about your tax acknowledgement letter, please consider that yours may have already been sent or may be in process. That said, should you need a replacement for any reason we will happily provide one! Respectfully, our ask is that you make your request only once, as multiple messages only add to the volume/backlog of similar requests that our staff and volunteers must work through during this busy time of year.
We appreciate your patience and understanding, and we certainly thank you for your generous support!
You can become a member online through our secure donation form. To learn more about levels and types of membership, visit our Ways to Give page.
We only have three formal pledge drives per year. KUVO is committed to bringing you more music and less interrupted programming. We strive to make our drives fun for everyone involved by having live in-studio performances, offering the best thank you gifts, and having special guests on-air.
We begin fulfillment for your thank-you gift upon receipt of your donation. It usually takes 1-2 weeks for the entire process – from receiving your membership request to mailing your gift. Occasionally it can take a little longer for specific items such as gift certificates – or if a gift (such as a t-shirt or CD) is on backorder. We strive to keep our members satisfied, and work to get your thank-you gifts to you as soon as possible!
Certain levels and types of membership receive member benefits. If you have a recurring monthly donation set up, you are a Jazz Messenger and get invited to our annual Jazz Messenger Party! To learn more about our Club memberships and their benefits, visit our Ways to Give page.
