1985 – 2025

That a community radio station in a major market would survive with a largely consistent format over 40 years is so remarkable, one wonders how it all got started. Mostly from the steel-trap mind of founding CEO Florence Hernández-Ramos. We’re happy to share the details of the effort to put KUVO JAZZ on the air in 1985. Non-profit and organizational nerds will probe the mechanics of board governance and legal strategy. Entrepreneurs will marvel at the bold and tireless creativity that the early team employed to raise the first $150,000 budget to get on the air – and all with a Chicano/Latino/bi-lingual emphasis.

It started with smooth jazz, funky blues, salsa, to the roots of Mexican folk, morphing into Tejano, Norteñeo and Southwestern beats. Jazz became front and center with a soulful improvisation of straight-ahead, bebop, swing jazz, and cool jazz. That spirit ignited Latin jazz, fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms in with jazz. Add in blues, rhythm and blues, and soul, the music that tells the stories of resilience to the sway of samba where Afro-Brazilian beats celebrate. Traditional Latin sounds, and a new jazz sounds! Together, they tell a story of culture and creativity. It’s a movement that is essentially what KUVO JAZZ is all about.

KUVO hosts spend countless hours searching, listening, digging up back stories, confirming rumors, calling sources, reading more liner notes, and cross-referencing. This is your home for Jazz, Latin jazz, blues, soul and more. We’ve got you covered. I don’t know the exact ratio, but prep time to airtime must be 5:1. It’s all for you the listener. You can check out the back stories of our programs in this section of our KUVO Legacy. But when it’s time to listen, we’ve done the work. Sit back and enjoy.

Radio shows come and go. But while they’re with us, they make an impact, like a song that gets stuck in your head. The theme, the stories, the songs, the vibe, the host’s personality… you find yourself coming back for more. Our favorite shows end for a variety of reasons, health, the host moved, and life changes. Radio changes. Over KUVO’s 40 years, we’ve had some great shows, leaving us with some great memories.
