The musical history of South Africa is incredibly rich and intricate drawing from indigenous tribes’ rhythms and melodies, choirs—gospel and otherwise—, dance and listening music, and since the 1930s jazz. Born from the urban slums Marabi is the grandparent of modern South African jazz. Time and space does not permit for a fair explanation and exploration of the depth and breadth of South African jazz, but tune in on Sunday, October 20 from 5 to 6pm to The Jazz River for a delectable sample of the rich and varied examples of jazz coming from that great county.
