What is Beat Box?
Beat Box aims to showcase Denver’s vibrant past and present music scene, and to elevate the voices of local artists through the creation of six utility box murals in Council District 9. Each mural will feature a portrait of a prominent historical or active Denver musician, and each will also include a QR code linking the public to more information about the musician and the artist.
Meet the Project Lead
La Molly, Assistant Program Director, KUVO Jazz and On-Air Host
“So, uh, what ARE you?” is probably the most frequently asked question of Colorado native La Molly. Like many Latinx people, La Molly has been on a search for what, or rather who, she is her whole life. Having grown up rather rootless, La Molly turned to music and thus was born the podcast “Super Sonido Show” (and now the radio show “Super Sonido”), to explore a similar identity quest in music like digital cumbia, electronic folklore, and tropical punk.
Our Muralist Application is Open!
We are looking for six muralists to paint portraits of selected Colorado musicians on the utility boxes near the Buell Public Media Center in downtown Denver. Each muralist will be given a $1,000 artist stipend. The murals will be approximately 44 x 68 inches each. Help us make downtown more beautiful and give honor to our state’s enduring musical legacy!
