Book Review: We’ll Always Have Casablanca

The movie “Casablanca” along with “Citizen Kane” are considered by many critics to be two of the greatest movies of all time.  Certainly “Casablanca” is one of the most written-about movies of all time.  In his new book “We’ll Always Have Casablanca – The Life, Legend and Afterlife of Hollywood’s Most Beloved Movie,”  Noah Isenberg has written a hugely entertaining and readable book that outlines how “Casablanca” came to be made and how, over time, it has become ingrained in the American psyche.

“Casablanca” started out as a play entitled “Everyone Comes to Rick’s” written by Murray Burnett and  Joan Alison.  This book gives us insight into things most readers don’t know about the movie.  In one of the book’s most enlightening chapters, Isenberg details how “Casablanca” became indebted to a host of actors and extras in the cast, people who were in fact refugees from the Nazi regime.
