interview with Debra Gallegos and Yolanda Ortega, their song “No Volero”

KUVO Radio’s flagship weekend program “Cancion Mexicana,” heard on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., has among its roster of hosts two new members of Su Teatro‘s Chicano Music Hall of Fame, Debra Gallegos and Yolanda Ortega.  The hosts / singers / actors / activists joined Carlos and Steve on “First Take” to review their careers (so far).

“How many of us get to be the hero among our peers,” said Ortega, who has been singing and acting with Debra Gallegos for 40 years.

“We were in our twenties when we met,” said Gallegos.  ”The only thing that has changed is that we could sing in the key of C and D a little bit better (then), and now we’re really good in G and A.”

Longtime activists on behalf of farmworkers, students and for civil rights, their music is their voice.  ”Out on a picket line, if you have a guitar and a song, you give people energy,” said Gallegos.

In the interview they played a portion of the song “No Volere” from their 2004 CD 2 Hearts, 1 Voice.
