Mafalda Minnozzi, Cinema City Jazz Scenes from Italian Film
$120 (one-time donation) or $10 (monthly sustaining Jazz Messenger)
Jazz music has long taken cues from the silver screen. Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile” and Johnny Mandel’s “The Shadow of Your Smile” are hallmarks in the jazz repertoire, and “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music remains one of John Coltrane’s most enduring performances. On Cinema City, Mafalda Minnozzi sets out to embrace a different songbook than the usual American fare – one from her native Italy with a distinctive flavor that only Morricone, Mancini, Cipriani, Nino Rota, and their compatriots could offer to the jazz language. Breaking free from the more obvious classical or popular approach these songs are known for, Minnozzi takes full advantage of her dramatic interpretive power, her sublime vocal range, and her cosmopolitan perspective to present her singular take on these timeless compositions. “This album is a tribute to how the poetic power of music can change a life. The songs on Cinema City connected me to my memories. Combined with the band’s brilliant playing, I was able to find a freedom that I had never felt before,” Mafalda Minnozzi says.

Miles Davis, The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 That’s What Happened 1982-1985
$180 (one-time donation) or $15 (monthly sustaining Jazz Messenger)

The 3CD set includes two discs of previously unreleased studio material–from the Star People, Decoy and You’re Under Arrest sessions–and a third disc showcasing Miles Davis Live in Montreal on July 7, 1983; the collection comes in a slipcase with individual album mini-jackets and a booklet featuring liner notes by Marcus J. Moore and revelatory new interviews with Miles’ 80’s players including Vince Wilburn, Jr. (drummer and bandmate), John Scofield (electric guitarist), Darryl Jones (bassist), Marcus Miller (bassist) and Mike Stern (guitarist). Eight of the ten tracks on CD 1 are unreleased studio tracks from the sessions that resulted in 1983’s Star People. The second studio album released after Miles’ six-year hiatus from recordings and performing, Star People was the artist’s last to feature the studio wizardry of Miles’ longtime producer Teo Macero.

Ella at the Hollywood Bowl The Irving Berlin Songbook
$120 (one-time donation) or $10 (monthly sustaining Jazz Messenger)
On August 16, 1958, just a few months after Ella Fitzgerald recorded her now-classic album, Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Irving Berlin Songbook, jazz’s ‘First Lady Of Song’ performed selections from that album live at the Hollywood Bowl to a sold-out crowd. Conducted and arranged by Paul Weston, who also arranged and conducted the studio sessions, this concert marked the only time that Ella performed these iconic arrangements live with a full orchestra. This landmark record, discovered in the private collection of producer, impresario, and Verve Records founder Norman Granz, marks the first time a live Songbook has been released from Ella. It is also significant in that it captures the only time Ella worked in concert with Weston. And, although she performed regularly at the Hollywood Bowl, this is the first full-length concert by Ella from this iconic venue to be released.
