JAZZ SUPPER CLUB SERIES | Charles Mingus Tribute

A poster for JAZZ SUPPER CLUB SERIES | Charles Mingus Tribute event

Harry Drabkin and Ron LeGault Sextet present an evening of the Music of Charles Mingus featuring Judy Niemack on vocals. Much has been written about Charles Mingus for his enormous sound and prodigious and outrageous gifts of composition. He was a renegade jazz master who bridged bebop to avant-garde. His big band continues to this day in NYC, and Judy Niemack and trombonist Stafford Hunter, both performing at this show, are veterans of the NYC Charles Mingus Big Band!

The all-star band also includes Harry Drabkin-bass, Ron LeGault- Piano, Harold Summey-drums, Mark Diamond-bass,

Judy Niemack’s beautiful voice, fearless improvising, impressive musicianship and versatility have resulted in her singing with many of the "who’s who" of jazz, including guitarist Peter Bernstein, pianists Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Cedar Walton, Kenny Barron, Jim McNeely, Steve Kuhn, and Kirk Lightsey, saxophonists Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano and James Moody, the great harmonica player Toots Thielemans, flugelhornist Clark Terry, bassists Ray Drummond and Eddie Gomez, drummers Billy Higgins, Joey Baron and Billy Hart, the New York Voices, and Danish Radio and WDR Big Bands.

Harry Drabkin, tenor sax is a Berklee College of Music graduate as well as a faculty alumni where he performed in the Recording Band, Faculty Jazz Ensemble, and more. His influences come from Miles, Coltrane, Cannonball, and Charlie Mariano. Harry recently retired as Chief of Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina and returned to Denver where he is active in our local jazz scene.

Ron LeGault, a pianist’s musical style ranges from a bit of funk and Harlem Stride to a touch of Horace Silver and be-bop. His quintet has been performing in the Denver/Boulder area for over a decade, and the annual performances of “Charlie Brown Goes to the Nutcracker” is a major Boulder Christmas attraction.
