Broadcast Outage: We're investigating a broadcast transmission failure and are working to resolve this issue. In the meantime, you can listen online here or on the KUVO app.
For our Summit County Listeners: The KVJZ 91.7FM transmitter site on Bald Mountain experienced a catastrophic power line failure. Because of the high elevation and winter conditions, repairs won’t be possible until next summer. Stream KUVO JAZZ on our website, the app, or your smart speaker.
The Ben Paille and Jonathan Powell Quintet brings vibrant energy and deep reverence to Nocturne as they celebrate the legendary Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyer Quintet. Terry and Bob Brookmeyer were two of the most innovative brass voices in modern jazz, blending wit, lyricism, and technical mastery to bridge swing, bebop, and the cool jazz aesthetic of the 1960s. By revisiting this repertoire, Paille and Powell honor their legacy as trailblazers who expanded the possibilities of jazz instrumentation.
Jonathan Powell - trumpet / flugelhorn, Ethan Cypress - Trombone, Dave Hanson - Piano, Matt Smiley - Bass, Alejandro Castano - drums.
Originally from Largo, Florida, trumpet player Jonathan Powell moved to New York City in 2001. In 2003, he earned praise for his participation in Sam Rivers Fluid Motion. The same year, he formed the group Nu Sangha and released “Transcend”. The band's newest release, “Beacons of Light,” earned a four-star review in Down Beat. In 2021, Jonathan relocated to Colorado to take a position with the US Air Force Academy Band. Since his move to Colorado, he has co-released a record featuring 10-time Grammy award winner Eddie Palmieri titled “Eddie Palmieri presents: Solar Sonido”.
Jonathan performs with a wide variety of artists as a sideman, including: Blood, Sweat and Tears, Eddie Palmieri and his Latin Jazz Septet and Salsa Orchestra, Arturo O' Farrill's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Miguel Zenon, Sam Rivers, Pedro Giraudo, Ricky Martin, and JT Taylor of Kool and the Gang. With these artists and many more, Jonathan has taken part in more than a dozen Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning albums. In 2016, he signed on with Yamaha to be an exclusive endorsee of Yamaha trumpets and Flugelhorns.
