The KUVO High School/Collegiate Series kicked off in 1997 and quickly became an important part of the station’s programming. The goal was always to support young musicians, but the results have been mind-blowing.  Two decades of monthly student broadcasts have been made possible by heroic music directors, dedicated parents, hard-working students, encouraging staff and volunteers, and a host of community underwriters that provide the equipment AND PIZZA to make it all happen!

KUVO is honored to have hosted a generation of talents who share their artistic presentations with the world over KUVO’s airwaves. Because KUVO believes in the importance of music in the lives and curriculum of young people, we continue to partner with various high school, college, middle school and even elementary school programs.  This innovative show is unique in Colorado’s radio landscape, and KUVO is one of the few, if not the only radio station in the country, with a home for these talents. So far, KUVO has welcomed an estimated 212 orchestras, bands, choirs, chorales, and ensembles to the Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio.  Together, we’re giving music education the support it deserves!

KUVO’s High School / Collegiate Series hosts the Denver School of the Arts (DSA) Jazz Workshop Orchestra under the direction of Dave Hammond in the Phyllis A. Greer Performance Studio on Tuesday, April 11 at 7pm. The band contains some of the region’s most accomplished student performers of jazz music, awarded this year with positions in Colorado All State Jazz Band, All American Jazz Band, UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival High School Honor Band and as recipients of the National YoungArts Awards.

Studio Club Members: Please Contact Arvida arvida@kuvo.org to reserve seats for you and a guest.

The DSA Jazz Workshop Orchestra is competing with 14 other bands selected from all over the country through a rigorous audition process. On May 13, the Competition & Festival will conclude with a concert and awards ceremony featuring the three top-placing bands at the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.  Festival events will be webcast live on jazz.org/live.

To celebrate this honor in Essentially Ellington in New York City, the Jazz Workshop Orchestra is performing in the Denver area in April and early May. The public is invited to experience this dynamic group of students at the following events:

April 7, 6-9pm: Hangar 41 at 825 Santa Fe Drive, Denver
