Enmanuel Alexander is a Denver musician who is passionate about amplifying and platforming Black musicianship in Colorado. With his weekly residency at Meadowlark Bar, he offers the community Off the Cuff, an interactive improv amplifying Black and Brown musicians and artists from the Denver metro area and across the nation inspired by mentors such as Ron Miles and Wes Watkins. Enmanuel has been playing music since the young age of seven, beginning with piano and progressing into drums, guitar, percussion, saxophone, and bass. He is now primarily a guitarist, producer, and creator, continually expanding his repertoire to include new genres and techniques of expression further influenced by his teachers Dave Devine, Gonzalo Teppa, Dawn Clement, and Shane Endsley.
His solo live-looping project, Namebackwards, transcends the societal norms of instrumental music by creating emotionally moving soundscapes and hypnotic grooves that evoke a sense of blissful nostalgia. His work with Kayla Marque, a Denver-based singer-songwriter, provides Enmanuel access to a more conventional audience as he directs and arranges her music with unique composition styles and brings her listeners beyond their traditional expectations. Finally, Enmanuel further extends his musicianship by participating in Juno Award and Canadian Folk Music Award-winning Jayme Stone’s eclectic folk music project, bringing in influences from West Africa to the Appalachian trails.
