Mark Emmons began drumming at 13 years old when he joined his junior high school’s band, but his passion for music was instilled at a much younger age.

Born to music loving parents, Mark grew up listening to Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Stevie Wonder and other greats.

“My advice to young players is to keep an open mind and an open ear, and listen to as much as you can,” Mark said. “Be accepting of different musical styles.”

Studying rock and other heavier styles has influenced Mark’s jazz style in that he isn’t afraid to put power behind his drum sticks.

“I grew up playing jazz in sushi bars and restaurants where we had to play very quietly so I always associated quiet with jazz,” said Mark. “The more I studied heavier styles, I started playing jazz heavier, putting more groove and power into the drums.”

To celebrate 30 years on the air and invest in the future of jazz, KUVO interviewed 30 local musicians under the age of 30. These features will be released on-air and online June 29-October 31.
