Inherited Granfalloon baggage….and it wasn’t Samsonite or Tumi!
And then there were the inherited debts – can you believe that after more than five years of trying to get on the air, Granfalloon had racked up debts because they were loaned money by various board members to keep trying to put the station on air? The accumulated debt was a “bonus” for transferring control to the license to the new Board of Directors of what was to become KUVO.
KUVO began fundraising to meet the required matching funds clause in the grant from the Public Telecommunication Facilities Program. The station’s tiny bank account grew by millimeters. But the dollar-by-dollar growth was like throwing bloody chum into shark-infested waters. Although the lenders had agreed to a monthly payment plan, one of them decided to get the money while the getting was good. Maybe they thought KUVO might go down the same penniless road that Granfalloon had traveled. He garnished the station’s account leaving a zero balance.
Once again, attorney Manuel Ramos rode in on the proverbial white horse (or flew in like Mighty Mouse) and saved the day. Reversing the garnishment on a technicality (that’s the kind way of saying the other attorney didn’t know what he was doing), Manuel restored the funds to their rightful place, KUVO’s bank account. The Project Director immediately withdrew all its funds leaving the lender no alternative but to get his greedy hand slapped and promise to abide by the monthly payment initially agreed to.
