Inside Lovetempo’s Debut Album, There Is a Light and the Journey Behind It

What's up! My name is alldaywes from Denver, Colorado and I have always been inspired by music’s ability to connect people and push boundaries, which is what I aim to do every week with the Jazz Odyssey program

After years of evolution, New York based producer, vocalist, bassist, and DJ Matty Safer has arrived at something that finally feels like home. His project Lovetempo and debut album, There Is a Light, blends jazz sophistication with dancefloor energy, built from a lifetime of influences and a deeply personal chapter of growth.

Safer’s path runs from D.C.’s punk and jazz scenes to a decade with The Rapture and later touring with Poolside. But Lovetempo was born in quieter moments, on the road with just a keyboard, bass, and his voice, while processing a painful breakup. The result is music that turns heartbreak into movement, pairing emotional weight with uplifting grooves.

Inspired by artists like Quincy Jones and Donald Byrd, Safer balances rich musicality with the raw simplicity of his punk roots. That duality defines the album’s sound: polished but never overworked, soulful but built to grab you on first listen.

The title track, years in the making and shaped by influences like Sam Cooke, captures the project’s core message—hope, resilience, and finding light within yourself. Even the closing ballad, written during a solitary holiday, leans toward optimism.

Now with the album out in the world and tour dates on the horizon, Lovetempo feels less like a debut and more like a long-overdue arrival. Music is designed not just to be heard, but to help you move through something.
