Jazz News: Christmas TV ad features local jazzers; RIP drummer Gene Bass; Time for Hanukkah Jazz!

Trumpeter Brad Goode and Drummer Gene Bass

This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music, and the arts.

A seasonal commercial running on Denver television depicts an older couple sitting by the holiday fireplace, and the husband plays a trick on his wife. When she gets up to answer the phone, he switches her losing Colorado Lottery ticket for his winning ticket. In the background plays a jazzy version of “The First Noel.”  The music was recorded in 2018, with Colorado’s own Tenia Nelson on piano, Troy Robey on bass and Amy Shelley on drums.

While KUVO stays on top of the newest sounds of jazz and the young artists that make this great music, we do not hesitate to honor the heroes and sheroes that paved the way. Last week, we learned of the passing of drummer Gene Bass at age 95. An army veteran and originally from Chicago, Mr. Bass mentored many players and held down the drum chair at El Chapultepec for years. He was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Five Points Jazz Festival. According to one of his proteges and fellow Chicagoan, trumpeter Brad Goode, he last played drums publicly a decade ago, at his 86th birthday celebration.

Break out the dreidel! Fry up those potato cakes! The Jewish festival of lights, known as Hanukkah, is upon us, beginning Sunday night at sundown.

Coming up on Wednesday night, December 17, Colorado bassist-educator and colleague here at KUVO is hosting her fourth annual performance of “A Jazzy Hanukkah” at The Muse Performance Space in Lafayette.

The Domi Edson Trio, with Spencer Zweifel on piano and Bobby Wiens on drums will swing through jazz arrangements of all your holiday faves: “Oh Hanukkah,” “Maoz Tzur,” “Sevivon,” “Ner Li,” “Al Hanissim,” and more, also available on CD and download. And some folks will be wearing over-the-top Hanukkah sweaters, too! (SOURCE: Domi Edson Trio - A Jazzy Hanukkah)
