Jazz News: Gift of Jazz & Su Teatro lose grants; Anisha Rush to Juilliard; Audio subscriptions; DUS KUVO’s 40th
This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music, and the arts.
The pending cuts to local arts organizations from the National Endowment for the Arts are now official.
The arts advocacy organization Gift of Jazz reports their $20,000 grant from the NEA was rescinded, impacting their programs for jazz in the schools and next generation jazz artists in Colorado.

Su Teatro’s pending $15,000 grant to produce a play and workshops in September was rescinded. Apparently, community arts groups nationwide received the same Friday night e-mail. The theater company has appealed, but director Tony Garcia says Su Teatro will produce Linda Parris-Bailey’s “Yankee Bajan” and host actors from around the U.S. and Barbados, including workshops and residency activities, regardless of support from the federal government.

Moving on… Colorado Springs native Anisha Rush is moving to New York, where she will study at The Juilliard School for an Artist Diploma. It’s a non-degree performance credential attained over two years.
Her degrees from the Thompson School of Jazz at CU-Boulder have served her well. She’s been in Chicago for the past couple of years, where she received a grant from Chamber Music America and was selected for an apprenticeship from the Berklee Institute of Gender Justice.

Back at the turn of the century, at the dawn of the digital age, there was some concern that folks were getting used to so-called “free music” via illegal file sharing and no-charge online streaming services. But there is one indication the trend has tipped. The latest Edison Research Share of Ear study reports just over one-half of Americans 13 or older pay for at least one audio subscription service as of Q1 2025. A quick walk-around survey here at KUVO revealed a half-dozen with more than one paid music account. (No surprise there.) The national trend shows a seven percent jump in users scaling back to just one paid audio account.

Shout out to the Denver Urban Spectrum for a very nice article about KUVO’s 40th anniversary. Writers Shaleigh Reed and Ruby Jones did a pretty deep dive into our history to explain in part how we got to where we are today. That’s Denver Urban Spectrum (dot) COM.
