Jazz News: Jon Batiste celebrates Palmieri; McCraven releases 4 EPs; Hugh Ragin wins again
This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music, and the arts.
Even with the passing of Eddie Palmieri on August 6, the tributes keep on coming, and that’s fine by me.
New York Post Page Six columnist Mara Siegler reported on Jon Batiste’s Central Park concert salute to Mr. EP, inviting members of Palmieri’s band on stage to play – Jeremy Bosch, Louis Fouché, and Zacchai Curtis. The article quotes Batiste: “We should know that this is a time that the Latino community is under persecution – and we are going to dance and send healing vibrations out into the world in the service of love tonight.”

Chicago-based drummer/producer Makaya McCraven’s latest work takes on really diverse formats. In addition to the normal LPs and CD releases, he’s announced four new EPs taken from earlier shows in London, Berlin, Brooklyn, Chicago and L.A. As he explains it, he’s aiming to take the magic moments of live performances and amplify that vibe with some overdubs. Collaborators include Theon Cross and Ben LaMar Gay.
On his next North American and European tour, McCraven will play two nights in Denver at Dazzle, October 23 and 24.
Congrats to Dr. Hugh Ragin. The Assistant Teaching Professor of Jazz Studies at CU-Boulder was just recognized with a cash award as the first Artist-In-Residence for the Center for African & African American Studies at CU-Boulder.
Hugh Ragin – a master of the pocket trumpet - and his band, the Messengers of Peace Octet, play at Dazzle on Monday, August 25, at 7 p.m.
