Live & Local: Asian Girls Ignite

"Smart & Loud & Proud & Quiet & Strong & Kind & Funny..."

Empowering friendships, educational programming, and community storytelling fuel Asian Girls Ignite (AGI), a non-profit that invites youth to explore and amplify their individuality. Founded by Joanne Liu and Mehgan Yen in 2020, it was birthed from a shared experience: while both grew up in entirely different cities, they each regularly faced racism and microaggressions and ultimately did not feel seen or heard as AANHPI girls. Since its creation, AGI aims to be an inclusive space where young girls and gender-expansive youth can feel a sense of belonging and celebrate their identity as part of the AANHPI community.

Registration is now open for their 2025 summer program. RepresentAsian Matters: I Am Powerful, which runs July 14–18, 2025, invites students to discover their own unique superpower. The summer program is designed for middle school students (grades 6-8 ) and AGI is currently working alongside middle school students to design some of the program elements. The program follows a full-circle approach where middle school students are guided by high school students who then both engage with community members in active storytelling.

Annabel Kaey, program coordinator at AGI, is involved in the creation of AGI's year-round programming, workshops, storytelling events, outdoor activities and more. She joined The Morning Set on Live & Local to share more about how they’re helping middle school and high school students build confidence in themselves and foster lasting connections in our community.
