Always sharp as a tack and on the ones and twos, jazz drummer Joe Farnsworth wanted his latest record to celebrate the legacy of “The Big Room,” the mythical place where the elders meet and make great music.

In conversation with The Morning Set’s Carlos Lando, Farnsworth shares lessons learned from Jackie McLean, Billy Higgins, Curtis Fuller, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane.

“They studied so hard and they had so much discipline, they could be free. The Big Room is a place where you can be free and be yourself. I spent many years trying to play like Max Roach, and I never did. It’s a living room, and you can arrange the furniture how you please.”
