Live on KUVO! | Studio Selects - Colorado Talent

When you think about a healthy jazz ecosystem, you begin to see that there are many players involved. The venues, the radio stations, the educational institutions, the jazz lovers and those with an open ear for discovery that attend the shows, and of course the players themselves. All entities work in harmony to ensure trust and a fruitful flow of creativity, improvisation, and collaboration.

The Phyllis A. Greer studio in KUVO’s previous home on Welton street first welcomed the music community to share their tunes with our studio club and those listening to 89.3 FM via our broadcast. The intimate setting of our performance studio gave artists a unique space to interact with their audience and further strengthened the bond among the Colorado Jazz community. Performers of all genres and styles continue the 2-decade legacy of live music in our Bonfils-Stanton Performance Studio and Masterpiece Studio at the Buell Public Media Center, bringing their unique sound and story to the KUVO Community.

This month on Live on KUVO! | Studio Selects, The Morning Set, and Jazz Odyssey host Abi Clark dives into some of the incredible performances by Colorado musicians in three selections, ranging from experimental jazz rap to Latin American grooves. All three recordings featured in episode 3 happened with a live KUVO audience in the room, so the energy just hits a little differently!

First, Daruma shares an original composition with our Bonfils-Stanton Performance Studio. This group of young, accomplished players brings a modern blend of electronics, locked-in grooves, and evocative cinematic textures to Denver’s contemporary jazz scene. We then take it to Two Moons Music Hall for a memorable Jazz Odyssey Presents concert featuring iies., a collective that honors musical perspectives in a sound that pushes sonic boundaries while exploring the connection between jazz and hip hop. Abi Clark rounds out the mix with the rhythms of the Victor Mestas South American Trio from our Masterpiece Studio. Victor Mestas is a leader in Colorado's Brazilian-Latin jazz scene and with the help of his trio, brought a Latin touch to a composition by Italian jazz pianist and composer Stefano Bollani.

Thanks to the support of our community, KUVO continues to uplift musicians in Colorado and this collection of musical moments are each a memory in the minds of those that were able to join us for these performances. Episode three of Live on KUVO! | Studio Selects is out now!
