Salsa con Jazz will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Fania Records! Part II
Fania Records is the most important record label of the salsa era in fact, they marketed salsa at a time when it was an obscure new term for Afro-Caribbean Latin dance music so proficiently that salsa is now a name for a wide array of music styles worldwide. Founded in 1964, we will commemorate Fania’s humble beginnings from when the co-owners sold records out of the trunk of their cars to their meteoric rise, becoming a powerhouse that evolved into the label synonymous with salsa followed by acquiring many of their competitors and monopolizing radio airplay.
Part two of our 60th Anniversary tribute will focus on their Fania Records glory years, the arrival of the “Queen of Salsa”- Celia Cruz to the Fania roster, the Fania All-Star’s travels to Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Havana, Japan, and other destinies around the globe. In the 1970s, Fania Records monopolized radio airplay in New York City, forcing their competitive labels to suffer financially due to lack of exposure that made it easy for Fania to acquire their music. Fania also contracted a deal with Columbia Records to issue 4 Fania All-Stars recordings.
We will share music from all these events on Sunday, December 8, beginning at 2 p.m. with host Arturo Gómez.
¡Que Viva la Salsa!
