Super Sonido: José González Returns with New Album

“So, uh, what are you?” is probably the most frequently asked question of Colorado native La Molly

Recently, José González joined La Molly for Super Sonido and talked about his new album, the ideas behind it, and his creative process.

José González has long been celebrated for his intimate, thought-provoking songwriting and masterful fingerstyle guitar work. The Sweden-based artist first captured global attention with his minimalist sound and has continued to evolve into one of the most compelling voices in contemporary folk and indie music.

Now, González returns with his fifth studio album, Against the Dying of the Light, a deeply reflective and ambitious project that builds on the foundation of his 2021 release Local Valley. The new album explores the complexities of modern life, blending philosophy, science, and emotion into a collection of songs that wrestle with humanity’s uncertain future. Drawing inspiration from thinkers like Yuval Harari, and Steven Pinker, González examines themes of moral philosophy, game theory, and the stories we tell ourselves to make sense of the world.

The album’s latest single, “A Perfect Storm,” showcases this balance of introspection and urgency. With propulsive fingerpicking and a striking sonic build, the track reflects on the dangers of technological acceleration and humanity’s role in shaping an increasingly unstable future. Rather than offering simple solutions, González leans into the tension, capturing both the wonder and unease of our current moment.

Elsewhere on the album, González reveals a lighter, more personal side with “Pajarito,” a Spanish language track dedicated to his son. The song adds warmth and playfulness to a record that otherwise grapples with big, often heavy ideas, highlighting the emotional range that defines his work.

At its core, Against the Dying of the Light is a call for reflection and collective action. González describes the project as an exploration of who we are as humans, “tribes of sentient apes” navigating rapid progress while facing the risks of division, dogma, and disconnection. Through his music, he invites listeners not only to reflect but to engage with the world in a more thoughtful and collaborative way.
