Vinyl Vault: Buddy Tate/Bob Wilber, “Sherman Shuffle”
This week’s Vinyl Vault features reedmen duo Buddy Tate (1913-2001) and Bob Wilber (1928-2019) and their album, “Sherman Shuffle,” released in 1978 on Canadian label, Sackville Records. On the album, Tate played tenor and baritone saxes, while Wilber played soprano and alto saxes; they both also played clarinet. They were joined by Sam Jones on bass and Leroy Williams on drums.
The track list included mostly covers of jazz classics, including an over-eight-minute ballad medley of “Lover Man,” “Body and Soul” and “Warm Valley,” the latter penned by Duke Ellington, who also composed the title track.
Join host Geoff Anderson for some sophisticated straight-ahead playing on the next Vinyl Vault, on Tuesday, December 30 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
