Vinyl Vault: Dave Brubeck Trio & Gerry Mulligan, “Live at the Berlin Philharmonic”

On the next Vinyl Vault, we’ll hear some tracks from a 1970 concert by the Dave Brubeck Trio & Gerry Mulligan, “Live at the Berlin Philharmonic.” The saxophonist most often thought of as being associated with Brubeck is Paul Desmond, but Brubeck also played and recorded extensively with baritone saxman Gerry Mulligan. On this album, the quartet was rounded out by Jack Six on bass and Alan Dawson on the drums.

The enthusiastic crowd that evening refused to let the band off the stage, spawning three encores which finally wrapped up at 3:30 am. The crowd wanted even more, but the stagehands and hall manager finally insisted that the show must end.

The album featured several extended tracks for Brubeck and Mulligan to fully explore the themes of the various songs. A highlight is “Sermon on the Mount” where the normally straight-laced Brubeck wandered into dissonance and free jazz territory, if only for a bit.

Check out some live Brubeck with Gerry Mulligan on the Vinyl Vault with Geoff Anderson, on Tuesday, March 11 at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
