Vinyl Vault: Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson, "It's Your World"
On the next Vinyl Vault, we’ll dig up some deep tracks from Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson’s 1976 double album, “It’s Your World.” The album was released on Arista Records during America’s bicentennial.
Scott-Heron (1949 – 2011) was an advocate for social justice and sang about contemporary problems. Although the album was recorded 50 years ago, much of the subject matter remains relevant today.
The album had both studio recordings and live performances and the double LP format allowed the band to stretch out on several numbers, such as “Home is Where the Hatred Is,” which had appeared on an earlier album, but was only about 25% as long as the “It’s Your World” version. Another song of note is “Tomorrow’s Trane,” a tune written by Alice Coltrane with lyrics by Scott-Heron. Throughout the album, the band lays down a tight, funky, sophisticated groove.
