Vinyl Vault: Larry Coryell, “Tributaries” and “Twin House”
Larry Coryell was known primarily as a fusion guitarist laying down scorching licks on top of incendiary rhythm sections. This week on the Vinyl Vault, however, we’ll explore Coryell’s acoustic side with tracks from two albums from the 1970s, “Tributaries” from 1979 and “Twin House” from 1977.
“Tributaries” is primarily a trio album where Coryell was joined by John Scofield and Joe Beck, who were also on acoustic guitars. On “Twin House,” Coryell played a set of acoustic duets with Philip Catherine. Since both records feature nothing but guitarists, the participants continually pushed each other to greater virtuosic heights. The results yielded ensemble guitar playing of the highest order.
Join host Geoff Anderson for some serious guitar work on the next Vinyl Vault, on Tuesday, April 29, at 8:30 p.m. on KUVO JAZZ.
