A look at the rise of Mandy Harvey during Women's History Month

Mar 23, 2019

Today's featured Colorado Women in Jazz artist Mandy Harvey is quite an impressive young woman. This Longmont High School graduate placed in the top 5 of Season 12 of America's Got Talent. She is an Ambassador for the nonprofit organization No Barriers to help people with disabilities overcome obstacles. Harvey uses "visual tuners" to help her find pitches. As a child she had hearing problems and underwent several surgeries as a child to try to correct them. Eventually she lost her hearing which caused her to leave vocal music education program at CSU. This setback did not stop her. While at Jay's Bistro in Ft. Collins she met jazz pianist Mark Sloniker and started performing regularly there. She went on to record several jazz albums and performed at Dazzle. Though her accomplishments have been many, she has also faced her share of fears and criticism. While on America's Got Talent she received death threats from members of the death community for promoting a "hearing" activity. She withstood the trial and pressed on.
