Since 1987, Denver Urban Spectrum magazine has filled a void in local coverage of people of color.  That vision has inspired publisher Rosalind “Bee” Harris to keep at it for 30 years.  Harris joined “First Take with Lando and Chavis” to preview six months of events making the milestone.

“The inspiration was the lack of positive stories about people of color in the mainstream newspapers,” said Harris.   “That’s still our focus.”  In the audio segment below, Harris also discusses the changes in the media landscape that challenge every publication.

Denver-based Panamanian vocalist Jah Goatfish contributed a new recording and video of the theme song “More Today Than Yesterday,” arranged and produced by national recording artist Bobby Wells, available on www.cdbaby.com.

A series of events under the banner “Power 30…more today than yesterday” include a kick-off reception (April 26th at the Clocktower Cabaret), a luncheon to announce 15 couples selected as the DUS Power 30 couples (May 13 at the Renaissance Hotel in Denver), and in August, a two-day Power 30 Family Reunion Festival and journalism scholarship event (Aug. 5-6 at the Great Lawn Park – The Meadow area at Lowry).

In June, Denver Urban Spectrum partners with Comedy Works South at Landmark in Greenwood Village to host a show with Louis Johnson.  There are plans to expand the magazine’s multi-media platform this summer, and in September, Denver Urban Spectrum will open the doors to Big Ma’s Place, a bed-and-breakfast named for the publisher’s mother.
