Vail Jazz

Roger Neumann died Wednesday Nov. 28th in Los Angeles. He was 77.

The baritone saxophonist and bass clarinetist was known for his interesting arrangements, including work on Phil Norman’s 2017 release “Then and Now: Classic Sounds and Variations of 12 Jazz Legends.”  But he was beloved in Vail, where he was an active contributor to the Vail Jazz Foundation’s “Jazz Goes to School” program.

Hot Club of France Tribute Band | July 20

Jul 17, 2017

Few jazz legends have a more exotic mystique than Django Reinhardt, the four fingered Belgian-born gypsy guitarist and banjo player who led the legendary Parisian ensemble known as the Quintet of the Hot Club of France in the 1930’s and 40’s.  Out of their sizzling, infectious, and swinging style, the musical genre known as “gypsy jazz” was born. An international quintet led by virtuoso accordionist Julien Labro will bring the smoking hot gypsy jazz style to life in this exhilarating performance.

Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo is a returning favorite at Vail Jazz, having wowed audiences last summer at the 2016 Vail Jazz Party. Diego fuses jazz, bossa nova and classical music, blending his virtuosic technique with an infectious interpretation of standards from the Brazilian and American Songbooks. He will be joined by award winning Italian singer and songwriter Chiara Izzi, “a talent to be heard, admired and anticipated” (Jazz Times).

Led by reedman and vocalist Adrian Cunningham, Professor Cunningham and His Old School is comprised of some of the most distinguished musicians on the New York scene, playing swinging and grooving music in the aesthetic of Sidney Bechet, Fats Waller, Professor Longhair and even Fats Domino! Their repertoire is deeply steeped in the New Orleans tradition, and is marked by hot jazz, growling horn, and grooving rhythms.
