Tierney Sutton talks with Paul on Evening Jazz
Evening Jazz host Paul Donovan was joined by Tierney Sutton on Thursday, November 14 at 4 p.m. as she stops by KUVO to talk about her gig at Dazzle
9-time Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton has received a “Best Jazz Vocal Album” Grammy nod for every project she has released in the last decade. Known for her impeccable voice and imaginative treatments of The Great American Songbook, Sutton is heralded for her abilities as both a jazz storyteller and her ability to use her voice as an instrument. Her 14 recordings as a leader have addressed themes such as materialism (“Desire” 2009), the pursuit of happiness (“On The Other Side” 2007), as well as paying tribute to the music of Bill Evans (“Blue In Green” 2002), Frank Sinatra (“Dancing In The Dark” 2004), and pop icon Sting (“The Sting Variations” 2016). Her 2013 Joni Mitchell tribute, “After Blue” featured keyboardist Larry Goldings, drummer Peter Erskine, jazz vocal legend Al Jarreau, and NEA Jazz Master flutist Hubert Laws.
Singer Tierney Sutton has had a musical relationship with pianist Tamir Hendelman that goes back over 20 years. While Sutton racked up those 9 Grammy nominations, Tamir Hendelman was arranging, recording, and performing with Barbra Streisand and Natalie Cole, leading his own trio, and being the featured pianist of the Jeff Hamilton Trio and Grammy-Winning Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra.
Tierney and Tamir have toured as a duo in Italy, Japan, China, and throughout the US. The pandemic cemented and deepened the partnership of these 2 LA-based artists. Throughout 2020 and 2021, Tierney and Tamir created and presented live-streamed themed shows and created “By Request” video dedications for fans.
Says Sutton: “This is truly one of my very favorite projects. No pianist in the world swings harder than Tamir and he’s an encyclopedia of songs so I’m able to be so free and improvisational. This project is a joy.”
Tierney Sutton and Tamir Hendelman will play two sets at Dazzle on Thursday, November 14 at 6:30 and 9 pm. Get Tickets!
