Featured performers at the 61st Monterey Jazz Festival, the Lamont Jazz Orchestra with Steve Wiest performs new jazz compositions by student performers. The Lamont Jazz Orchestra tied with The University of Central Oklahoma on Sunday, March 11 to win FIRST PLACE at the prestigious Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. Ozomatli, the six-piece band that mixes Latin, hip hop, and rock music together under the influence of salsa, jazz, funk, reggae, and rap, brings their eclectic music style to the Newman Center for the first time. Twice-honored with Grammys for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album, Ozomatli is presented by the Newman Center in partnership with the Denver Biennial of the Americas Festival. Veteran of the Afro-Cuban jazz movement, Arturo O’Farrill has directed the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra since 1995. This storied artist has appeared at three landmark Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts, performed world-wide with major artists, and produced several projects, including Fandango at the Wall, an encouragement to embrace what unites us as people.
