The Vinyl Vault will feature pianist Keith Jarrett in concert with his “European Quartet” on their 1980 ECM album “Nude Ants.” (Say it fast.) The album was recorded live at the Village Vanguard in May 1979. Jarrett performed on piano as well as timbales and percussion and was joined by Jan Garbarek on saxophones, Palle Danielsson on bass, and Jon Christiansen on drums and percussion.

It’s a double album with sides running 30 minutes or so. Consequently, we’ll only have time for about a quarter of the album. Most of the cuts are quite long and we’ll hear just two of them, “Chant of the Soil” and “Innocence.” Despite the extended nature of the songs, they continually morph before your very ears. It’s like watching clouds on a sunny day gradually changing shape and constantly creating new and delightful images in unpredictable ways. Some of the music captures ECM’s trademark ethereal atmospherics, but just as often the rhythm section lays down a driving groove for Jarrett and Garbarek to dance on top of.
