Year of La Chicana—Flo Hernandez-Ramos
Ever tuned into Canción Mexicana on KUVO? Shout out to Florence Hernandez-Ramos for that!
Flo was born in Lamar, Colorado, in 1950. In the 1970s she was involved in the Chicano Student Movement at the University of Colorado Boulder. In 1983 Flo, along with hundreds of others, helped found public radio KUVO 89.3 FM, and for twenty-three years she was its president and CEO. During that time, along with other volunteers, she hosted Canción Mexicana, a program dubbed the “spiciest show on radio” by The Denver Post, offering a mix of Colorado, New Mexico, and Tejano music. After leaving KUVO, Flo helped found and became the first CEO of the Latino Public Radio Consortium, a national organization that works with Latino public radio stations in fourteen states and Puerto Rico. She is now fully retired.
