The Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band is a significant presence in the jazz community, and their debut album, Incarnadine, offers a unique perspective. The band’s history is deeply rooted in the legacy of Native American assimilation and the musical training once mandated in Indian boarding schools. While these institutions were sites of hardship, that instruction evolved into generations of Indigenous marching bands and jazz ensembles.

Incarnadine represents the modern continuation of that lineage. The album features sixteen talented Native and Indigenous musicians who blend traditional jazz with contemporary flair. We believe the depth of this narrative, paired with the ensemble’s musicality, will make for a compelling segment on All Nations Rise.

The ensemble includes: Julia Keefe (vocals, director), Delbert Anderson (trumpet), Mali Obomsawin (bass), Edward Littlefield (drums), Marc Cary (piano), Quinn Carson (trombone), Chantil Dukart (vocals), Rogan Tinsley (alto saxophone), Grant Richards (piano), Marcos Varela (bass), Asa Peters (rap, vocals), and Franklin Piland (arranger).
