Behind the Mic: Deborah Walker of the Gospel Train
The Conductress Deborah Walker has been hosting Sunday Morning’s The Gospel Train from 8-9 a.m. for 15 years on KUVO. “It's not about preaching, it's not about religion, you know, The Gospel Train is about relationship. It's bringing that community in and giving you the joy of the Lord, the spirit.”
Greg Rashid started the program about 2 decades ago on KUVO to share the history and diversity of Gospel music with the Colorado community. When he stepped down, Deborah took over the show and has been bringing her mix of classics and modern shouts, choirs, and rhythms to the airwaves ever since. “I try to mix it up, you know, I mean, I was given an hour and I said God just bless me with this hour to really be able to speak to the people in this community… James Cleveland all the way to Kirk Franklin. I always say, you know, when you want to start your Sunday, you tune in, you gotta ride on The Gospel Train and then you can get to, you know, Cancion Mexicana (and) all the others, but you got to start there!”
Deborah Walker was recently honored at a sold out brunch at the Centrepoint Auditorium, celebrating her 20 year career in broadcasting and community impact through hosting The Gospel Train. She joined Carlos, Steve and Abi behind the mic on The Morning Set ahead of this event to talk about her legacy on KUVO and where Gospel music is today.
