Kim Berry talks with Bobby Broom
Bobby Broom is a Chicago-based guitarist, composer, and educator who learned at the feet of the masters.
His first major gig occurred as a prodigious teen playing Carnegie Hall with the iconic saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Nearly 50 years later, Bobby has worked closely with legends including Stanley Turrentine, Art Blakey, and Miles Davis, as well as many artists from his own generation. He’s also a bandleader: The Bobby Broom trio has been together for over two decades.
Broom wound up playing for six years with Rollins, and Broom’s new album, "Notes of Thanks" (recorded with his trio), is set to be released May 1. It takes a deep dive into Sonny’s songbook: “It was always in the back of my mind as I was doing other projects,” Broom says. “I felt like now was the right time. I wanted to say thank you to Sonny while he is here. And the trio hasn’t recorded for a number of years.”
KUVO’s Kim Berry chatted with Broom in advance of his March 1 set at Dazzle about his auspicious beginnings, as well as what inspires him today.
