Jazz News: Boulder’s Full Cycle Jazz closed for now, Business of Jazz conference goes virtual

This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music, and the arts.

Jazz fans were surprised by the sudden closing of Full Cycle Bike Shop, Café & Bar in Boulder last week. The bike shop changed owners, effectively shutting down one of the newer live music venues on the Front Range.

Over the last 19 months, Full Cycle built up a strong calendar of shows that ran the spectrum from blues to Brazilian to bop to progressive to Americana to vocal jazz to dance music to world music and more. Program director Suter DuBose ran the same kind of open-armed approach to live music at his restaurant, Caffe Sole, which closed a few years ago.

Suter tells me he’s working on a plan to keep the music playing, so all that is to be announced. But in the meantime, he’s got nothing but love and gratitude for the musicians, merrymakers, and staff that made the scene.

KUVO will keep you posted on what’s next.

Deep thinkers about the business of this music we love are organizing a virtual conference called “Jazz-Con” to be held September 15 and 16, entirely online.  Nineteen panels and presentations are already scheduled in English, Spanish, and Japanese.

For musicians and industry types, topics include metadata that makes a difference, overcoming the dirty details of touring, mastering the maze of streaming and royalties, all with a digital emphasis. Organizers told me the music game has changed, and it continues to change at a faster pace.

(Seriously, what does it take to be a professional working musician these days? The street musician on the corner has a QR code on his instrument case – yes, he takes Venmo, Zelle, CashApp, and PayPal. The teaching gig is considered the new record deal, so you can maybe buy a house and raise a family. And if you’re touring, it’s ALL about the merchandise. Gimme one of those t-shirts! Streaming royalties. Publishing rights. Social media presence. Today’s musician has to master all of it. Exciting, right?)

One more thing about this September’s business conference for jazz: the website All About Jazz.com will co-present the Jazz Forward Awards to recognize “businesses, nonprofits, educators, and entrepreneurs who elevate jazz awareness, discovery, and community impact.” Nominations for the Jazz Forward Award are due July 31. See details at Jazz-Con. (SOURCE: Jazz-Con)
