Jazz News: Five Points Jazz grants due in October; RIP Boulder’s Prasanna Bishop; Charlie Porter’s $10K Jazz Cipher

This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music, and the arts.

We’ve just learned about a new round of grants to support jazz performances and jazz-related activities in Five Points. The City of Denver wants to celebrate the history of jazz in the "Harlem of the West" and foster a new generation of artists in the neighborhood with contemporary, innovative jazz programming. It’s a part of DENVER CREATES, the city's roadmap for a thriving arts and culture ecosystem.

But the deadline is TODAY, Monday, October 27. Apply at the website Denver Arts & Venues under the “Cultural Investments” tab. SOURCE: Denver Arts & Venues/Five Points Grants

Prasana Bishop RIP
Prasana Bishop RIP

We note the passing of Boulder musician, producer and studio owner Prasanna Bishop, who died, reportedly, on October 13. Bishop built and ran Akashic Recording Studio west of Boulder, used by artists like Richie Cole, Eric Gunnison, String Cheese Incident, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Ars Nova Singers, Wendy Woo, Eminem and many others. He performed at KUVO studios with Joe Bonner, at Film on the Rocks with Erica Brown, with Bill Kopper and others.

Seth Larson, who posted the news on Facebook, called Bishop “a force of nature and spirit.” Others considered him “a quiet powerhouse of music.”

Condolences to his families.

Trumpeter Charlie Porter’s new album “Cipher” comes with a true-life code-breaking challenge, and a $10,000 prize.

"Cipher" by Charlie Porter

The album has eight tracks, in which nine clues are hidden, embedded into the music via ciphers and codes. Decoding the clues leads to a secret location somewhere in the continental United States, where an object has been hidden. Each clue brings you closer to completing the map. You need not be an expert, but you must have a basic working knowledge of music notation, ciphers, and codes.

The first person to find the object and present proof of their solution claims a $10,000 reward.

No purchase is necessary to participate, but the physical CD doubles as a cipher disk decoder, and the sheet music can also aid you in the hunt. Porter, himself on the adjunct faculty at NYU, has also provided classroom ideas for educators. Details at Charlie Porter Music. SOURCE: Charlie Porter Music/Cipher
