Hal Galper

This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music and the arts.

The founder of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts, Bob Boilen, left NPR recently for a hyper-local low power radio station serving the neighborhood of Takoma Park, Maryland. But Boilen is still speaking on national issues, like Congress’s rescission of funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Now, pay attention here if you stream KUVO or use the KUVO app.

In a post for the Non-Commercial Music Alliance, Boilen reminds us that, out of the spotlight, it was the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that negotiated and paid for the streaming licenses for virtually the entire public radio system. Going forward, these fees may have to be managed individually, station-by-station. The impact on the whole music infrastructure on this matter may be massive. We’ll keep you posted on how this matter develops. (SOURCE: NoncomMusic Stories / Bob Boilen)

We remember pianist Hal Galper, who was in the Cannonball Adderley Quintet in the mid-70s, and he played with Phil Woods in the 1980s. The classically trained musician was converted to jazz while a student at Berklee in the 1950s. In his later years, he was a noted scholar and jazz educator. He led nearly 30 album projects, including a Live at Vartan Jazz disc recorded in Denver.

He mentored bassist Todd Coolman, who recalls a rumor that he disliked the sound of his Fender Rhodes so much, he threw his instrument into the East River. Galper was 87. (SOURCE: Todd Coolman/ Hal Galper)

An important part of the jazz community are the advocacy and education organizations. You know, the after-school programs, the free pop-up concerts around town, the showcases for new jazz talent, and the celebrations of the masters. Colorado-based Gift of Jazz does all that, and we want to wish them a happy 30th anniversary this Saturday. They celebrate with a gala and the music of Gen Z vibraphonist Daniel Trujillo honoring the centennial of Cal Tjader. Talk about inter-generational! Details at GiftofJazz.org. (SOURCE: Gift of Jazz)
