Jazz News: Telluride All-Stars include 3 from Colorado; Sunday jazz at the airport; Colorado artists place in Downbeat Critics Poll

This is Jazz News, a look at what’s news in jazz, music, and the arts.

Summer jazz programs are in full swing, giving students the hands-on experience they will need to make a go of this crazy music business. In session right now are the Telluride Jazz All-Stars, before the upcoming festival. The Colorado musicians include multi-instrumentalist Daniel Trujillo – the CU-Boulder student who will be working on the vibes; saxophonist Ryan Black is at DU’s Lamont School of Music; and the prodigious composer-pianist attending the Berklee College of Music, Scarlett Before Horses. Students enjoy a week of collaborating and pop-up shows, and finally, on Saturday, they perform on the Town Park main stage. The directors of the Telluride program are Josh Quinlan and Annie Booth. Now that the City Park Jazz season is a wrap – and thanks to all who made it out – Sunday afternoon jazz hangs move out to the airport. The Concerts on the Fly series begins with an opening DJ at 1:30, then a local band at 2:30, and the headliner at 4 p.m. It’s located on the outdoor plaza between the south end of the main terminal and the hotel. It’s free, but tickets must be reserved, and they make each week’s tickets available on Monday at 10 a.m. for the next week’s show. On August 10, it’s DOTSERO, with the Wash Park Band and DJ Kimani. Upcoming acts in August are Nelson Rangell with Pieces of a Dream, Eric Darius, and on Labor Day Sunday, Rose Royce, with KUVO JAZZ & THE DROP’s DJ Bella Scratch opening. Downbeat magazine has published its annual Critics Poll in the August issue, and we’ve got the Colorado connections. In the “Guitarist of the Year” category, Bill Frisell came in second to Mary Halvorsen. Julian Lage was third. DU-Lamont School of Music’s Remy LeBoeuf came in second to Sarah Hanahan as “Rising Star Alto Saxophonist of the Year.” LeBoeuf’s Assembly of Shadows also got noticed in the Rising Star Large Ensemble of the Year category.
