Jazz Odyssey: Venus Cruz & Super Distant Boyfriend on YouTube, Twitch
Get ready for Venus Cruz & Super Distant Boyfriend, coming to KUVO JAZZ YouTube and Twitch channels as part of The Jazz Odyssey Presents series, Thursday, October 9, at 11 a.m. and available to demand. The groovy, vibey, soulful session was recorded at Two Moons Music Hall in Denver, with one of the original Jazz Odyssey emcees, Andy O’.
From jazz to soul, hip hop to Afro-Latin, Denver-based vocalist Venus Cruz has opened for artists such as Black Thought of The Roots, Meshell Ndegeocello, Saul Williams, Zap Mama, Al Green, Guru, Vieux Farka Toure, Tinariwen, Big Freedia, GoGo Penguin, Corey Henry and Marc De Clive Lowe and others.
In 2014, Cruz organized, directed, and performed in the Billie Holiday Centennial Celebration at Denver’s Union Station, bringing in a record performance crowd for the space. Cruz also performed at the Prince Tribute at Red Rocks. In 2016, Venus opened for Grammy winner Gregory Porter at The Chautauqua Amphitheater in Boulder, and played at Denver’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) and City Park Jazz.
In 2019, Venus played the part of freedom fighter “Lola Devine” in the futuristic multimedia project, “The Five Pointers,” created by artist Thomas “Detour” Evans for Red Bull Music. Venus has won several Westword Magazine music awards and was a 14-year host of the popular radio show “Jazz Odyssey” on 89.3 KUVO.
Her ongoing bands include Super Distant Boyfriend and What Young Men Do. Within weeks of its inception, What Young Men Do played Denver’s UMS Festival, the Larimer Block Party (Project Pabst), and opened for Grammy-nominated artists Hiatus Kaiyote and Emily King.
Venus Cruz has residencies at Herb's and Appaloosa, to name a few. Her sets with Super Distant Boyfriend include original compositions and a few completely reimagined covers.
