Live & Local: Cyrus Chestnut joins The Spirituals Project on Stage at The Newman Center Thursday Night

Steve Chavis joined KUVO JAZZ in 2012 as morning news host and Public Affairs Manager, and spent five years alongside Carlos Lando as co-host of “First Take with Lando and Chavis.” He served for five years as program director

Acclaimed pianist Cyrus Chestnut is guest artist with The Spirituals Project Winter Concert, “The Exodus: One Story, Two Communities,” Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at Gates Concert Hall in the Newman Center for the Performing Arts, on the University of Denver campus.

Steve Chavis and Abi Clark from The Morning Set caught up with Chestnut at his home to discuss his lifelong connection to gospel music, “the architecture of the praise break,” the power of experiencing a concert in person, where improvisation is “real-time thought.”
