Take 5 with Brandee Younger

Brandee Younger

Did you ever wonder what your favorite musicians are listening to, or the recordings that influenced them? “Take 5” is a look at the music that inspires and excites them. It’s difficult to choose ONLY five recordings!

Among the most celebrated jazz artists to emerge in the 21st century, Brandee Younger is a harpist, composer and bandleader whose music connects spiritual jazz and classical training to the rhythmic soulfulness of R&B and hip-hop. She grew up on Long Island, where she sang gospel, studied the harp classically and became enamored of both hip-hop and the vintage soul that rap producers sampled. When Younger was a teenager, her father introduced her to Alice Coltrane’s music — a transformative moment that all but defined her life’s journey.

Her first LP for the storied Impulse! Records label — a.k.a. The House That Trane Built — was 2021’s Somewhere Different. A track from that album, “Beautiful Is Black,” earned Younger a Grammy nomination in the Best Instrumental Composition category, making her the first Black female solo artist to achieve this. Two years later, on Brand New Life, Younger revitalized newly discovered Ashby compositions, and that LP won the 2024 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album. Gadabout Season, released in 2025, is a more reflective and personal work focusing on Younger’s inimitable original music. In addition to her non-stop performance schedule, Younger is a dedicated educator, teaching on the faculties of New York University and the New School.

D’Angelo and The Vanguard: Black Messiah (RCA)

I've played this album religiously since it came out. I bought it on vinyl from Okayplayer when it came out, and I didn't even have a record player. Another Life truly has a hold on me.

Since his untimely passing, I've naturally revisited it in a more thoughtful way, and it is reminiscent of Voodoo!

Alice Coltrane - Ptah The El Daoud (Impulse!)

A classic. Of course, this features "Blue Nile," the piece that introduced the harp to me in a whole new light but also the timeless "Turiya & Ramakrishna" that I play to this very day.

Turiya & Ramakrishna is one of those songs that are as relevant today as it was when it was released (I assume...I wasn't born!) and the energy of the title track is just infectious. The interplay between the horns!!!!

Dorothy Ashby - The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby (Cadet)

The most grooving harp album - I'd say, one step removed from Afro Harping, this one explores new depths and sounds, including Ashby singing and playing Koto, all without abandoning the underlying groove.

It's, in ways, a slight departure from the other Cadet albums, and I love where she was going.

Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On (Tamla)

This is one desert island album. So many of the concerns that he expressed still plague us today.

Save the Children is a song I covered on one of my past albums - Soul Awakening. This album could come out today, and in my humble opinion, would have the same impact.

Hubert Laws - Afro-Classic (CTI)

My future recording dreams live here.

This is such a beautiful recording blending genres together and utilizing what I feel are really interesting instrument combinations.

I want to do a chamber project next!
