The Night Beat Jazz Goes to the Movies Week Three: Film Music of Michel Legrand

Week Three of Jazz Goes to the Movies highlights film scores and more by the French composer and pianist Michel Legrand on this special Pledge Drive edition of the Night Beat.

Among the films we’ll feature: The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), The Picasso Summer (1969), The Summer of ’42 (1971), The Go-Between (1971), F is for Fake (1973), The Other Side of Midnight (1977), Yentl (1983) and more including from 1969, The Happy Ending, largely filmed in Denver and other parts of Colorado. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, one for Jean Simmons as Best Actress and the other for the song “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?” It lost out to “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

We’ll include performances of Michel’s songs by vocalists Cassandra Wilson, Astrud Gilberto, Dena DeRose, Ernestine Anderson, Freddy Cole, Laura Fygi, Alexis Cole and the vocal ensemble Take 6. Instrumentally we’ve got Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Ray Barretto, Eric Alexander and more on tap.
